What is Psychology?
Psychology is the study of the human mind and behavior. Psychological counselling or psychotherapy applies our knowledge of science to facilitate personal healing and growth. Our psychologist will support you in developing self-acceptance, compassion, and confidence, which leads to personal empowerment.
The College of Alberta Psychologists is the regulatory body for the profession of psychology in Alberta. Their mandate is to serve the interests of the public and to guide the profession of psychology. Our Certified Canadian Counsellor is registered through the College of Alberta Psychologists.
How Does Psychological Counselling or Psychotherapy Work?
Every counselling session is different, based on your needs and concerns. Initially, we establish an attitude of gentle acceptance and care, known as loving presence. This maximizes safety, respect and the cooperation of the unconscious. We then help you learn how memories, beliefs and patterns shape your experience using a state of consciousness called mindfulness. Mindfulness is characterized by relaxed intention, a gentle and sustained inward focus of attention, heightened sensitivity, and the ability to notice the contents of consciousness. This allows us to access your memories, beliefs and patterns that are in your unconscious safely and effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions
Therapy is a collaborative relationship between client and therapist, which supports individuals in perceiving and transforming limiting thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and beliefs.
Therapists offer unconditional acceptance and compassion to support your transformation using a variety of techniques such as mindful presence, body-centred (e.g. Hakomi), cognitive-behavioural, solution-focused, and person-centred modalities.
Ultimately, our therapist at Muscle Elements supports you in creatively experiencing your path to healing.
Typically, the goal of therapy is to identify and evolve areas of your life where you feel stuck with limiting patterns of behaviour.
With the support of therapy and a therapeutic relationship, individuals can open their hearts, experience their pain, heal it, and change.
Therapy is most effective if you desire to explore and heal your internal limitations and experiment with an expansive, open, and empowered version of yourself.
Do you want to shift something that is blocking you from experiencing the fullness of who you are? Who you are in a relationship? Who you are in the world?
With your courage, playfulness, and commitment, you can open yourself to joy, freedom, inspiration, creativity, love, and empowerment.
- What is the purpose of my emotions?
- What are my thoughts?
- What is my intention?
- What do I value?
- How do I change?
- How do I heal?
- How do I live more openly?
- How do I live more authentically?
- How do I accept the frightened parts of myself, but not let them drive the bus?
- Who am I at the core?
- What am I meant to do?
- What can I learn about myself from my strong emotional reactions/activation?
- How can I come from my integrity?
- What do I have control over?
- Where can I let go/where can I stop trying to have control?
Holistic therapy benefits people of all ages. It addresses many conditions, such as:
- Personal growth and empowerment
- Resilience
- Self-esteem
- Work-life balance
- Life transitions
- Navigating interpersonal relationships
- Stress/tension
- Lack of energy
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Trauma
- Addictions
In the first session, the therapist discusses your informed consent, confidentiality, and questions. The therapist will explain their background, training, and therapy modalities.
Your therapist will ask you questions, such as:
- What brought you in?
- What would you like to be different?
- How would you know if your life was different?
All changes happen in the present. Sharing your experience reveals your current emotions, thoughts, and sensations and opens the door to transformation. As your share, your therapist will help you notice these aspects of your psyche.
Your therapist follows your verbal and non-verbal cues to identify anything that wants to be shared, and growth that wants to happen.
People naturally move towards integration, healing, and growth. There will often be something that comes up for you to work with, sit with, explore, experiment with, and get curious about between sessions.
At Muscle Elements, your therapist begins the following session with a look at how life in between sessions has been. Transformation requires weaving experience, thoughts, and emotions in session with action, thoughts, and emotions in your life.
